The Portreath Surfing Vortex forms during outgoing tides, when water flows through two rock formations known as The Gull Rocks. As the water rushes through these narrow channels, it creates a circular motion that intensifies as the tide drops. This rotating current produces a funnel-shaped vortex that spins counterclockwise.

Parking charges start from £2 for one hour, providing flexibility for short-term stays. However, for extended beach adventures, visitors can opt for all-day parking at the same cost. The car park remains open until 10pm, allowing ample time to soak up the coastal charm.
Access to the beach from the car park involves a short set of steps, which may not be suitable for wheelchair users. However, there is a level access route available from the road, ensuring inclusivity for all visitors.
