Offshore model wave height is not breaking-wave height at the Vortex. The automatic score estimates potential from regional waves, period and wind only; it cannot determine whether the reef is working or safe. This exposed, powerful reef wave is for highly experienced surfers and bodyboarders.

🏄 The Portreath Surfing Vortex Guide

The Portreath Vortex is a powerful reef wave near the harbour wall at Portreath, on Cornwall’s north coast. Famous among experienced bodyboarders, its fast, hollow waves can break heavily over shallow rock when the swell lines up. It is very different from the sandy beach break in Portreath Bay.

Long-period Atlantic swell, local wind and the tide all influence whether the Vortex works. The wave can be unforgiving, with a dangerous reef, strong currents and nearby harbour structures. This is an experts-only location, not a place to learn to surf. Watch from a safe vantage point if conditions are large.

🏊 Water Quality & Bathing Water Status

Check the Environment Agency information for the designated Portreath bathing water before entering the sea. Water quality can deteriorate after heavy rain, including runoff from the Illogan Stream and possible storm overflow impacts.

This widget monitors Portreath Beach, not the Vortex reef itself. An annual classification does not confirm current conditions; check live pollution alerts before entering.

⚠️ Portreath Vortex Reef Safety

The Vortex is a serious, high-consequence reef break. Heavy, hollow waves can break over shallow rocks close to the harbour wall. Beware of impact with the reef, powerful currents, submerged hazards and dangerous access or exit conditions. Never enter the harbour channel or climb onto sea walls in heavy swell. For highly experienced surfers and bodyboarders only; check conditions on site and never go alone.
